Extractions

Preserving your natural teeth is our priority, and extractions are considered only as a last resort. The absence of teeth can lead to difficulties in chewing, jaw pain, and misalignment of other teeth. Dr. Brian Mitchell & Associates is committed to exploring all available options with you guiding you towards a suitable replacement, be it an implant, denture, or bridge.

Benefits of Dental Extractions

  • Relief from Severe Pain: Ends the pain caused by a severely damaged tooth.
  • Prevention of Further Decay: Stops further tooth decay, preventing its progression.
  • Gum Disease Prevention: Averts the risk of gum disease.
  • Infection Control: Keeps infections from spreading in the tooth, gum, or bone.

3 Reasons for Dental Extractions

  • Unusability: Decay or injury has rendered the tooth unusable.
  • Space Constraints: Insufficient room in the mouth for the tooth.
  • Severe Infection: Presence of a severe infection in the tooth, gum, or bone.

Will Dental Extractions Hurt?

Dr. Brian Mitchell & Associates prioritizes your comfort during tooth extractions. Specially trained assistants are vigilant to ensure your ease, promptly alerting Dr. Mitchell to any discomfort. While some discomfort is normal during the procedure, experiencing no discomfort at all could indicate a medical issue.

Types of Anesthesia Used

Dr. Mitchell employs robust anesthesia to numb the mouth, ensuring a painless extraction. This anesthesia contains Articain, the most potent available. For those requiring deeper sedation, options include Benzodiazepine Anesthesia and Nitrous oxide.

What Happens After Dental Extraction?

After extraction, control bleeding by applying sterile gauze for an hour, allowing a blood clot to form. Dr. Mitchell may use stitches for additional healing support. Expect swelling over the next three days; manage it with ice packs and prescribed medication. Rest and keep your head elevated for the first 24 hours.

Post-Extraction Care

  • Bleeding: Slight bleeding is normal; use a wet tea bag for heavy bleeding.
  • Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss normally, avoiding the area around the empty socket.
  • Diet: Stick to soft foods for 48 hours; avoid straws to prevent disruption of blood clots.

What to Avoid After Extraction

For the first 48 hours:
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Drinking through a straw
  • Rinsing your mouth
  • Using mouthwash
  • Strenuous activity
